Fence types for cycleways
The fence is chosen for the location's visibility, space and expected traffic:
- Galvanised steel post-and-rail for basic boundary separation in open areas
- Welded mesh where more strength or access restriction is needed
- Chainwire mesh in council or park spaces where airflow and visibility matter
- Barrier fencing with anti-climb mesh near steep edges, bridges or transport corridors
All of it is built to the height and clearance rules for cycleways, with safety caps or top rails where required.
Safety and compliance
Fencing beside a cycle route has to keep safe distance from the path edge, avoid protrusions and sharp materials, stay visible in low light, and allow emergency access where needed. We follow local council guidance, road-authority specifications and shared-path design standards so the fencing complies with the relevant transport and safety codes.
Working with the terrain
Cycleways run along mixed ground, sloping verges, riverbanks, concrete path borders, vegetation buffers and stepped access. We adjust the line and post depth for stability, driving or concreting posts to suit the soil, site access and any underground services. Anti-climb mesh and angled supports go in where climbing is a concern.
Access and finishes
Where required, gates or barrier panels prevent unauthorised vehicle entry, guide traffic during construction, and allow maintenance access. Finishes are matched to the setting, galvanised for corrosion resistance, or black or green powder coat to blend with the landscape near parks and community spaces, and we work with project designers where appearance matters.
Installation
We inspect and confirm the layout, coordinate with the asset manager or civil contractor, deliver and set posts, connect panels, and clean up with a walkthrough. We provide traffic control or temporary fencing when the work is near roads or pedestrians, and we handle later re-tensioning, gate adjustments, post replacement after vehicle damage, and rerouting during upgrades.
